Jozef van Wissem: New Music for Early Instruments – ISSUE PROJECT ROOM

This October, ISSUE Project Room will present Dutch lutanist Josef van Wissem in a two-day residency including collaborations with Jim Jarmusch, Susan Alcorn, Richard Bishop, Gregg Kowalsky, Paul Metzger, Loren Connors, and Heresy of the Free Spirit (Che Chen and Robbie Lee).
New Music For Early Instruments sees van Wissem collaborating with several American artists, all adding essential elements to an ongoing dialogue between the music of our time and early music, when there were fewer written compositions and no recordings.

Hobo Expanding Cult Band Live on Radio Heart 5/29

Tune into Radio Heart on East Village Radio on Sunday May 29th 4pm-6pm for a special live, improvised set by super group Hobo Expanding Cult Band. The group is made up of members of three synth-based projects – Hobo Cubes (Frank Ouellette), Das Amore, and Femminielli (Bernardino Femminielli) – on tour from Montreal. Judging from their individual work, their collaboration will have elements of some bizarre, lost sound library record or something off Sky Records. Check it out!

Also, Hobo Cubes, Das Amore and Femminielli will be playing a show on Sunday night at Silent Barn in Ridgewood with Remnants and Dream Police. INFO HERE

David Tagg Live on EVR March 27th 4-6pm

Cover of “I Am The Wolf”

Listen to Radio Heart on Sunday, March 27th from 4-6 PM for a special live performance by New York based musician David Tagg. Having roots in guitar improvisation and tendencies toward experimental drone-based compositions, Tagg has released nine full-length albums and dozens of EPs since founding the boutique labels Second Sun and INSTALL with fellow artist and frequent collaborator Brian Grainger. On the show, David will perform a new conceptual piece based on his “Family Reels”, an archive of reel-to-reel recordings made by his grandfather in the 1950’s and 60’s, using the reels as an atmospheric backdrop for Tagg’s unique and expressive guitar playing. David Tagg’s ninth full-length album, “I Am The Wolf”, was released at Second Sun in January – you can preview the full album here, as well as listen to several of David’s other releases.

Music for 16 Futurist Noise Intoners

I’m planning to attend “Music for 16 Futurist Noise Intoners” tonight, part of the Performa biennial. For the event, composer Luciano Chessa reconstructed “intonarumori” or instruments originally devised by noted Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo in 1913. During the evening, a number of musicians will perform original compositions using the instruments. You can view a quick teaser video below.

I discovered Luciano Chessa’s work through a podcast my friend Rick Bahto recorded for Old First Church Concerts last year, which includes Louganis, Quadri da una citta phantasma, and additional commentary. You can listen to the full podcast here.
