A Million Keys

My first 24 hrs in California

I am back in the Bay Area for the next week and a half. Expect reports of burritos, thrifting, and redwoods.

On my first night I followed my buddy George Chen around Oakland. After a large meal at Cafe d’Eritrea on Telegraph, we hit up a bus show in the back parking lot of the legendary gay bar the Whitehorse down the street. Retired from its AC Transit career, the bus is now a portable performance space.

On the front John Benson attached a cassette kiosk made of an old snack dispenser. Rad!

Inside the bus. (That’s Fantastic Magic )

A bunch of folks who live above the Whitehorse converted their adjoining apartments into a temporary gallery during the show. It was fun to navigate the art explosion.

We then went down to 21 Grand for one of the Edgetone New Music Summit shows. High Vulture, Jesse Quattro, Van Boven, Eddie the Rat and Gowns were on the bill that night. I was obsessed with this coffee table at the space- I never got the artist’s name- you could manipulate the waves by kicking or shaking the table.

Jesse Quattro

Gowns played last. Apparently they were having problems with their sound, but I didn’t even notice. Their set was perhaps the best. Gowns write earnest, folky (at times), admittedly somewhat emo songs overlayed with electronics.

That’s George- being a ham!
