Ghost Station by Kristen Roos

Ghost Station by Canadian artist Kristen Roos is a site specific sound installation in Toronto’s Lower Bay Station, an abandoned subway platform which was last in use in 1966. The composition will use a spectrum of low frequency recordings of the subway to both vibrate objects within the space and emit sound. Click here to view a diagram of the project. Roos is especially interested in the association between infrasound and paranormal experiences, either as a scientific cause for ghost sightings or as a traditional means for conjuring spirits. The proliferation of infrasound is a reality of the man-made urban environment, making his sonic reanimation of this “phantom” structure a commentary on the unnatural and potentially supernatural soundscape of the city.

Ghost Station will be included as an exhibition in Toronto’s Nuit Blanche on September 29th.
